SEARCHING THE FSQUOTES BLOG 101

Search this blog (or any blog) by using
K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Shorty)
.
Let's keep searches for Michael Jordan
simple, here or in any search engine.

KEY CONCEPT:
.
SPECIFICS will narrow the search and
return fewer results, mainly those
results your specifics have identified.
.
Conversely, a more generalized search
will return far more results, making it
necessary to browse for your specific
answers within the larger results pool.
.
SEARCH FOR MIKE USING K.I.S.S.
.
In a blank search field, you can enter
jordan
.
and get results on Mike, Eddie, the
country, the singer, movie titles, etc.
.
You want to be more specific, so you
type in:
"michael jordan"
.
Voila! Your results, and lots of them,
including your cousin, the butcher
down the street, etc.
.
Using K.I.S.S., you add specifics.
"michael jordan" basketball
.
Now you have fewer results but you
want to know more about his work
in baseball too!
.
"michael jordan" basketball OR baseball
.
Notice the capitalized "OR", a Google
command which must be capitalized
like all other Google commands in
search mode.
.
"OR", in this sample, tells Google to
find pages referring to Michael Jordan
and then accept those pages that also
refer to basketball OR baseball OR both!
.
Fancy words for your friends:
BOOLEAN LOGIC - relax, they are
fancy words math gurus use to
explain the simplest search logic!
.
Now you want to see funny quotes by
Jordan AND Scottie Pippin.
.
quotes "michael jordan" AND "scottie pippin"
.
Notice only Google commands need to
be capitalized in a search - I will omit
exceptions to avoid confusion.
.
"AND" tells Google to accept only
pages that refer to quotes by or about
both Jordan AND Pippin.
.
BOOLEAN LOGIC!
Ready for M.I.T. now?

Also notice "funny" is omitted - what's
"funny" to a search engine? Nothing,
unless the word "funny" is found during
its search! :)

Ready for the hard stuff?
Well, here it is!
.
quotes "chicago bulls" -pippin
.
Tres simple, n'est pas? You want to
see funny quotes by the Bulls players
with no references to Scottie this time -
the minus sign immediately before
his last name excludes Scottie from
results of funny quotes by Bulls players!
.
(Yo, Scottie, I used your name
because, like Mike, everybody knows
who you are!)

Good news! Most searches are
that simple. As a beginner, use those
for success, then try more complicated
ones, though you'll rarely need them.
